Poco dopo l'una di notte il Beechcraft Bonanza guidato dal giovane e inesperto pilota Roger Peterson, che volle decollare nonostante le cattive condizioni meteorologiche (la zona era interessata da nevicate), perse quota all'improvviso - probabilmente per un disorientamento del pilota - andandosi a schiantare in una piantagione di granturco poco fuori Mason City, la località da cui era decollato, otto miglia a nord di Clear Lake, nello Iowa.

Nell'impatto il pilota e i tre passeggeri persero la vita. I tre musicisti, impegnati in una lunga tournée nel Midwest, si erano esibiti quella sera alla Surf Ballroom di Clear Lake e si erano rimessi subito in viaggio: la sera dopo avrebbero dovuto tenere un altro spettacolo nel Nord Dakota.

Sul luogo in cui avvenne l'incidente è stato inaugurato il 16 settembre 2003 un monumento a ricordo dell'evento.
